Last Weekend

Last week I mentioned that I crashed the Harvard-Radcliffe Alumni Club's tour of the Symbols of Power Exhibit at the Bowers Museum. I forgot to mention that some of us were also lucky to attend a free concert at the museum given by Karen Hwa-Chee Han on the erhu. She brought us up to date on what she's been doing, including experimenting with jazz and classical western music, and showed us a film clip from her Hollywood Bowl performance.

Saturday I made it to the Rhino Records sponsored screening of Gigantor at the JACCC in downtown Little Tokyo. There was a very diverse standing room only crowd in attendance to view the first three preserved episodes of "Tetsujin 28" and to hear Fred Ladd (also responsible for bringing Astro Boy to the US) describe how this Japanese TV series became an American TV staple (I watched it when I was a child) 40 years ago. According to Mr. Ladd, the Japanese creator of Gigantor was inspired by Medieval western knights in armor and B-29 bombers.

Sunday I went to Descanso Gardens to see a performance of Japanese classical dance as part of the Garden's two day annual Japanese Festival. There was also an origami class for the kids and a dispaly of viewing stones.

I made it back to Little Tokyo (again) to visit the JANM exhibition on Boyle Heights. This is one of the better and more interesting exhibits I've seen there. I grew up near Boyle Heights and the exhibit answered questions I've always wondered about, such as who the Molokans were.
