Secretary       Nancy Robertson

Treasurer      Ariel Gatti

Special invitation to the BEHN Valentine's Fundraiser Dance attached:

Special message about the future of AAPA-BSS

The board met earlier this month to discuss the future of AAPA-BSS in 2002. As it stands, we have very few confirmed members and no volunteers for any of our activities. We have decided that we will keep functioning till about the end of February 2002. If there are no nominations for new officers, our chapter of AAPA will go into hibernation mode. We will see if anyone who is interested can join the main AAPA organization directly.  We may also be able to maintain some kind of representation in the APPA umbrella organization. I will continue to write the newsletter and maintain the internet website, but since we will no longer qualify as a BSS affinity group, we may have to look for a new means of distribution

Currently, we have in our treasury

savings           $1146.6

checking          $283

total                 $1429.6

Nancy Robertson, Ariel Gatti and myself have signature authority for writing checks. We will hold the treasury in trust in the hope that there may be renewed interest at some time in the future.

So unless we experience an increased membership enrollment and people step forward to take over running this group, we will be ceasing operations in the near future. Thank-you for your past support.

Last Weekend

I attended the forum entitled Balancing Civel Liberties and National Security? 1942-2002: What lessons can be learned from the WW2 Japanese American Experience? This was an interesting session, but unfortunately some individuals decided to use the Q&A session as a podium instead of asking the panel questions.

I also went to see the movie Metropolis at the Nuart. Based on a 50 year old comic book by Osamu Tezuka (remember Astro Boy?) this synthesis of computer graphics and retro character designs weaves complex themes of the abuse of technology, dehumanization,  and the nature of humanness. Visually spectacular, it was one of LA Weeklys must sees.

Doug,

Thank you so very much on letting me know about the Wen Ho Lee lecture.  It was such an informative and touching experience.  In spite of his nightmare ordeal he had such a wit, humor, courage and spiritual mannerism.  I'm reading "My Country Versus Me,"  and can't put it down.  I also plan to read Helen Zia "Asian American Dreams."

God Bless Alice Tanaka

Mme. Wakana Hanayagi is teaching a free workshop every Wednesday starting in February for 10 weeks at the JACCC (244 S. San Pedro, LA) at 2PM. Sponsored by a grant from the Los Angeles Regional Arts Department. Students are required to bring their own yukata (cotton kimono) obi, tabis, fans and other accessories. For more info. Call 310-822-9193

The Chinese American Museum is hosting the 1st Annual Chinese Lantern Festival. http://www.camla.org/events/lant0202.htm The festival will hold a ChildrenŐs Lantern Making Workshop at the Chinatown New Year Festivities, Saturday and Sunday, February 16th and 17th. The Lantern Festival will take place in Paseo de la Plaza, Olvera Street, across from Union Station in Los Angeles on Saturday, February 23, 2002, 1pm to 7pm. This festival is made possible in part by a grant from the City of Los Angeles, Cultural Affairs Department.

Currently, we are recruiting volunteers to help out at the three days event. This is a great opportunity for your organization to contribute their personal time, expertise and effort to make a positive impact on our community. Volunteers who speak other languages in addition to English (Mandarin, Cantonese, Spanish, Taiwanese, Shanghainese etc.) are strongly encouraged. Please visit our website for more information, www.camla.org

Friends of the Chinese American Museum is a volunteer support group organized to raise funds generate community interest, support, and provide information about programs and research project for the museum.

Our 509(a)(1) documentation is available upon request. Should you have any questions, please contact museum's Administration Assistant, Betty Liu at (213) 626-5240.
