Last Weekend

I went to see the movie "We Were Soldiers" (see http://www.rottentomatoes.com/movie-1112647/reviews.php for a selection of reviews), the account of the of the real battle for LZ X-Ray (http://www.lzxray.com/) during the Vietnam War. The movie does make an attempt to humanize the NVA soldiers, showing that they have the same uncertainties and fears as their American opponents. The movie also depicts a multicultural American unit, while at the same time showing the irony of segregated laundries outside of the Army base in the States. The movie is well done, but doesn't have the same visual flair as Ridley Scott's "Black Hawk Down" as well as not having as much gore, but that isn't saying much in this context. The movie doesn't have any pat answers, but does give us another look at a painful chapter in our history.

March 23, Struggle and Success: The African American Experience in Japan. Film Screening and Discussion at the JANM. Co-Sponsored by the USC Program in American Studies and Ethnicity and USC Asian Pacific American Student Services. Struggle and Success: The African American Experience in Japan is the first documentary to thoroughly examine the complex relationships of African Americans and Japanese people. Regge Life, executive producer and director, initially went to Japan as an Artist Fellow with the Japan-U.S. Friendship Commission and Bunka-Cho. He is the recipient of many awards including a CINE Golden Eagle.

I received this from Patricia Miyoshi at BEHN:

Dear Volunteers:

I want to mention a volunteer opportunity which may be of interest to you. On Wednesday, March 13, BSS has been invited to participate in Career Day at El Segundo High School (ESHS). Check-In is at 9:00 AM and you would be visiting two classrooms, one at 9:40 and the other at 10:45. The program will conclude at 11:35. This is a volunteer program and I am unable to provide charge numbers, but I will provide lots and lots of praise and thanks!

You don't have to worry about doing this alone. You will be paired with another person for the classroom visits. The goal is to expose students to a variety of career options--you just need to speak with the students about your career choices. (I have a list of suggested talking points if you need help.)

Please feel free to distribute this to your co-workers. We need a cross section of employees-both technical and professional.

Thanks for volunteering! You are making a difference!
