Last Weekend

First I attended the Bunka Sai Festival in Torrance for an hour, which was enough time to sample all of the junk food and listen to a choral performance in Japanese. This festival raises money for the the student exchange program with Torrance's sister city in Japan. I liked the Chinese American Parents' Support group which was selling such ethnic delicacies as rice noodles and nachos. Some of the performances on the program looked interesting, but I had to go to make it to the NCRR's panel of speakers on Peace in the Middle East which included Palestinians and an Israeli. I also made it (on a different day) to ,the Cherry Blossom Festival in Monterey Park which was pretty much like the ones I've been to in previous years, and ate more junk food, but skipped the chili rice. Somehow I also worked in seeing the play "Refrigerators" (Through Apr. 28, Sundays, 7:30 p.m., Fridays, 8:30 p.m., Saturdays, 2:30 p.m., 8:30 p.m.)at East LA College. For $13, that wasn't a bad deal. Asian American playwrights still have to work in four letter words and the play deals with alternate lifestyles, so the play may not be for everyone, but it's better than the LA Times review I read.

The East West Plyers is now presenting "Monster" at the David Henry Hwang Theater, 120 Judge John Aiso St., Little Tokyo. Thursdays-Saturdays, 8 p.m.; Saturdays and Sundays, 2 p.m.. $25-$30. (213) 625-7000. Running time: 2 hours, 25 minutes. See LA Times review below.

Part of a feedback letter from Steve:

I have been asked to help with the JACCC Family Fun Fest next month, like every year for the past 5 years. I will send info to you in case you or others would like to volunteer some hours and get a free gift and a drink. But working with children will also be rewarding.

[For info on this event, see http://www.jaccc.org/familyfunfest/famfunfest.html, May 11, 12. Also I received some more info:]

I checked into Childrens Day at JACCC and Kathy T. said she has enough volunteers for Saturday, so I am helping out on Sunday. There are two options 9 am - 1 pm and 1 pm to 5 pm. If you or others like to work with kids (not just for Japanese) contact Kathy T during business hours JACCC 9 am - 6 pm at (213) 628-2725, ext 107.
