Last Weekend

June 5 YUKO MARUYAMA QUINTET at Catalina Bar & Grill,1640 North Cahuenga Boulevard, Hollywood 90028 (323) 466-2210 http://catalinajazzclub.com/ I made it to the 10:30 performance which actually started around 11. Jazz up close and personal.

Thursday I went to see Turandot from the nosebleed seats in the Music Center. The biggest ovation of the night was for soprano Hei-Kyung Hong (http://www.pittsburghsymphony.org/pghsymph.nsf/bios/Hei-Kyung+Hong) who played the the slave girl Liu. In this thankless role Ms. Hong spent the whole performance costumed in rags and half the third act as a corpse lying center stage. However, with the new ending by Berio (Puccini never finished the opera) Liu now has a central dramatic role, selflessly sacrificing herself for her Tartar masters.

June 8 "Life of the Land" a Hawaii play by Edward Sakamoto at Japan America Theatre. This was the best realized play in the trilogy. The main protagonist was a guy fleeing from an "aerospace engineering job in Redondo Beach" back to Hawaii, so I could kind of relate, except for the Hawaii part.

Sunday I went to the aviation museum in Santa Monica. Nice photo exhibit on the upper level about African Americans in aviation, especially the Tuskegee Airmen. http://www.museumofflying.com/
