Jan 18 Japanese American National Museum, 1:00 pm Little Tokyo: Spiritual Doors to the World, Panel discussion on the origins of the Pentecostal church, the nature of the lo cal community when the movement started in 1906, and how the church grew and impacted the neighborhood, the city, and eventually, the entire world.

Jan 19 Japanese American National Museum, 2:00—4:00 pm Taiko Jam Session with Hydaiko Taiko. Participants will have an opportunity to play taiko and learn about the origins and traditions of the big drum.

Jan 25 Japanese American National Museum, 1:00 pm Craft Class with Ryoko Shibata, Paper Crafts. In conjunction with the exhibition, Crafting History: Arts and Crafts from America’s Concentration Camps. Class fees are $5 for National Museum members and $11 for non-members, includes Museum admission and supplies.

Jan 26 Japanese American National Museum 1:00—3:00 pm Crafting History: Arts and Crafts from America’s Concentration Camps Exhibition Tour and Bird Pin Workshop. Exhibition tour of Crafting History: Arts and Crafts from America’s Concentration Camps with curator Kristine Kim. Following the tour, artist Flora Ito will teach participants how to make bird pins out of alternative materials. Appropriate for children ages 10 and up. Fees are $5 for National Museum members and $11 for non-members, includes Museum admission and supplies.

Feb 8 Sister Cities of Torrance and Kashiwa Celebrate 30th Anniversary at the James Armstrong Theater. The cultural performance starts at 8PM and is $15. Show includes Japanese song and dance, ballet, poetry, magic, incense burning, and tea service in the lobby.

Mar 1 Jazz pianist Makoto Takenaka will perform at the Coast Botanic Garden in PV Peninsula, 7:30PM and the New Otani Hotel in Little Tokyo on Mar 2 at noon. Mar. 1 concert is $20 at the Frances Young Hall of Horticulture, 26300 Crenshaw Blvd. Mar 2 is a benefit for Keiro Senior Healthcare, tickets $50. Last Weekend

Actually the last day of 2002 I went to see: continuing to March 2 Munakata Shiko 1903-1975 at LACMA, A comprehensive retrospective of One of Japan's greatest 20th century artist. For information call 323.857.6000 or www.lacma.org/info/press/munakatapr.htm#top This is a really good exhibit, taking over most of the Japanese Pavilion, including all the way down the spiral walkway.
