Southern California Premiere, The Art of Rice Traveling Theater, Aratani/Japan America TheatreThe Art of Rice Traveling Theater takes audiences where ancient and modern worlds converge. This performance invites all to a sensory world experience where cultures gather and converge. This truly shows the unifying value of rice among all in this diverse world. Kinnara Taiko _ 34th Anniversary
San Jose Taiko _ 30th Anniversary
In Los Angeles- Aratani/Japan America Theatre
The taiko phenomenon in North America traces its beginnings to three pioneering ensembles: San Francisco Taiko Dojo (1968), Kinnara Taiko (Los Angeles, 1969) and San Jose Taiko (1973). Celebrating milestone anniversaries, the three taiko groups share the stage in a rousing, energizing concert featuring new, original compositions and collaborations. Distinctive in style and character, each group exudes creativity, mastery and experience. Their combined performance history includes numerous film credits and recordings, and each group has played a vital role in influencing and mentoring many of the now nearly 150 taiko groups practicing in North America today. Nurtured and supported by their respective communities, the 3 Japan Town

Sep 20 Saturday, 1:30 PM Judgment Without Trial: Japanese American Imprisonment During World War II by Dr. Tetsuden Kashima. Reading and Book Signing at the JANM. Judgment Without Trial reveals that long before the 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor, the U.S. government began making plans for the eventual internment and later incarceration of the Japanese American population. Author Dr. Tetsuden Kashima, who is currently a professor of American Ethnic Studies at the University of Washington, uses newly-obtained records to trace this process back to the 1920s, when a nascent imprisonment organization was developed to prepare for a possible war with Japan, and follows it in detail through the war years. Kashima will speak on his findings followed by a question and answer session and book signing. The book is scheduled to be published in August 2003 and will be available through the National Museum store. Published by University of Washington Press.

Last Weekend
I was busy. Friday night I forked out $33 to see Passion at the EWP from the balcony. This is one of the best productions from the East West Players, especially compared to some of the productions from their last season. Passion is the West Coast premiere of one of Sondheim's latest works, and it's played straight with no attempts to localize or make it relevant. It's sort of Harlequin Romance meets Sondheim musical. No four letter words for once, but it does include nudity. May not be for everyone, but it did get a very favorable review from the LA Times. Saturday I attended the Stan Honda presentation of his photojournalism on 9/11/2001 (http://shop.store.yahoo.com/janm/eyewitness.html) and also caught a peek of Governor Davis. I showed up at the Chinatown Moon Festival, but missed the UCLA CCDC. Sunday I went to the LA County Fair to see the API festival. Although it cost $7 for parking and $14 for admission, there was some pretty good stuff there. The History of Flight pavilion at the fair was also pretty good.
