The Japan America Society presents " The Changing Roles of Japanese Women: Three Decades As A Businesswomen in JapanThree Decades as a Businesswomen in Japan ," with Naoko Imasato , Senior Advisor, Overseas Training, Human Resources Development Division, Dentsu, Inc. Naoko Imasato graduated from Keio University in 1963. Six years later she completed her MA degree at University of Pennsylvania, and soon joined Dentsu, one of the world’s largest marketing and public relations firms. For over three decades she has served as account executive and account supervisor for foreign clients such as Coca-Cola, Nestle, Max Factor, and American Express. The Southern California Japan Seminar , the USC East Asian Studies Center , and the UCLA Asia Institute present "Excavating Heian-kyo: An Archaeologist's Report ," a lecture by Akira Yamanaka , Professor, Mie University, Japan. One of Japan's most prominent archaeologists, Professor Yamanaka has been closely involved in the reservation and continued excavation of significant archaeological finds, especially in Nagaokakyo. Sep 13 Performance - Traditional Indian music with Ashwini Bhide-Deshpande, Vishwanath Shirodkar and Seema Shirodkar At Occidental College. The Music Circle presents an evening of traditional Indian music, with vocalist Ashwini Bhide-Deshpande ,Vishwanath Shirodkar on the tabla , and Seema Shirodkar on the harmonium . Among the vocalists of the younger generation of the Jaipur-Atrauli tradition of Khyal singing, Ashwini Bhide-Deshpande is an artist of great caliber. Her singing is notable for her systematic exposition of the raag structure, brilliant phrasing, variety of taan patterns, and ease and grace in all of the three octaves. She has performed in a number of prestigious music conferences in India for over fifteen years and has had successful concert tours of Europe and North America. Vishwanath Shirodkar's knowledge of classical vocal music gives him an added advantage as a tabla player, and he has been recognized as one of the best accompanists of the younger generation. Sep 20 Saturday, 1:30 PM Judgment Without Trial: Japanese American Imprisonment During World War II by Dr. Tetsuden Kashima

Reading and Book Signing at the JANM

Judgment Without Trial reveals that long before the 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor, the U.S. government began making plans for the eventual internment and later incarceration of the Japanese American population. Author Dr. Tetsuden Kashima, who is currently a professor of American Ethnic Studies at the University of Washington, uses newly-obtained records to trace this process back to the 1920s, when a nascent imprisonment organization was developed to prepare for a possible war with Japan, and follows it in detail through the war years. Kashima will speak on his findings followed by a question and answer session and book signing. The book is scheduled to be published in August 2003 and will be available through the National Museum store. Published by University of Washington Press.

In an exhibition celebrating the 40th anniversary of the LA chapter of the Ikenobo School of flower arrangement, head of the school Shunho Shimbashi, teachers and students present an exhibition of more than 60 arrangements. Ikenobo, the oldest school of flower arrangement, is said to be the origin of all ikebana styles. Oct 12 Tibet: Treasures from the Roof of the World Exhibition of Tibetan art opens Oct. 12 at the Bowers Museum. Rare art of Tibet, never before seen in the Western world, will begin a national tour at the Bowers Museum of Cultural Art on October 12, 2003. The landmark exhibit will feature more than 200 objects drawn exclusively from collections in the Tibetan capital of Lhasa and from the Dalai Lama’s magnificent winter and summer residences at the Potala and Norbulingka Palaces, as well as the recently established Tibet Museum. Film Screening and Panel Discussion at the JANM (www.janm.org)

When Japanese American parishioners of the Mount Hollywood Congregational Church were forcibly removed in 1942, the church, like many at that time, denounced the government’s actions. In addition to speaking out, the church took measures to safehouse parishioners’ valuables as well as keep in close contact with their friends in concentration camps throughout the United States. This story is now the subject of the first in a documentary series, In This House: The History of America’s Houses of Worship, which will precede a panel discussion with church members who will share their wartime experiences. The discussion includes the current Reverend Paul Talstrom, who maintains the church’s archives of letters sent from camp to the church detailing the lives of the prisoners.

At this time OCA-GLA is not sponsoring a booth but we will be providing volunteers at the KSCI-TV and CDC VERB Campaign Celebrating Active Children at the 8th Annual Harvest Moon Festival. The landmark event returns to the Arcadia County Park on Sunday, September 21st.

The 2003 event embraces a new approach with numerous sports areas helping teens and youth discover new ways to become more physically active. The 2002 event attracted a 30,000 pan-Asian crowd from all over Southern California, who spent the day shopping, eating and enjoying top Asian entertainment.

The Festival mainstage will get the audience moving with everything from hip-hop and rock to cultural performance and include a special closing performance by a well-known pop-sensation from Asia! Keeping with tradition, one lucky guest will drive away in a brand new Volvo!
