Day of Remembrance 2003 Photos

Welcome to this site on my hobbies and travels.

Big Island of Hawaii 2003

This site is for my friends and relatives, if they can find it. It's meant to be G rated and only for fun. I don't want a job and I don't necessarily want to meet you, unless you're interested in any of the topics covered here. The main topics are comic books, anime, model airplanes, and Byzantine history (maybe someeday I'll update that page.) I've also provided some free space for clubs to which I belong. I'm starting a new page at www.ikemi.info

Except for the APPA page, I did most of this , and since I'm an engineer, this website is ugly and functional. A few years ago I contracted pneumonia as a result of being a workaholic. The doctors have also warned me about potential stress problems. So, I picked up some strange hobbies for a middle-aged guy, such as comic book collecting, model building, and animation, just to relax. I've been certified as a scuba diver and a pilot, but I'm no longer current. I also like hiking, bicycling, and Macs.
This isn't a real user friendly site. It's meant to be explored and there are many things hidden away. However, go to the table of contents at the bottom if you want to cheat. Sometimes I even update it.

When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things. For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known. And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.

1Cor.13 King James Bible (Well, it all depends on what one defines as childish things.)

Harley, the world's laziest
Australian Shepherd
Harley is a rescued dog and is about 10+ years old. He actually belongs to my parents. I had an Australian shepherd named Max, but he passed away. Harley is on the large side, about 60 lbs., which is maybe why his original owners dumped him. Aussies are usually closer to 40 lbs. Harley is trying to teach me doggie games. I think I've mastered the stalking, opening game, and maybe the middle chase, but I've given up on the closing chase and tackle. These days, though, he is getting to be too old to play.

Well, as long as I have a little room here, how about a list of some of my favorite movies:
  • Great Expectations, the David Lean version
  • Capitaine Conan, directed by Bertrand Tavernier. One of the best war movies ever.
  • Pride and Prejudice, starring Greer Garson, screenplay by Huxley. It doesn't get any better.
  • Nights of Cabiria Fellini directs his wife, Giulietta Masina.
  • The Searchers Ford directs John Wayne in his one good role.
  • They Were Expendable Some think this was Ford's best film, but it's also one of his least popular, perhaps because it shows the defeat and destruction of a PT Boat Squadron early in WW II. John Wayne costars in one of his "vulnerable" roles.
  • 55 Days at Peking Okay, not a really great film, but they don't make action adventure films like this anymore, even if historically it's hokum.
  • The House of Mirth Gillian Anderson can actually act, and darn well in this incredible film.
  • The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes , Billy Wilder directs the one movie closest in spirit to the original Holmes canon. Some of the scenes are just plain beautiful, especially the quiet ones such as the picnic. Casting Christopher Lee as Mycroft was plain genius. This respectful homage has Holmes matching wits with a woman again and losing big time in more than one way. Have your hankies ready at the end.
How about some useful links.
